Wolds Way Lavender was on Mrs M’s things to do list on our recent holiday in North Yorkshire. In essence, it is a lavender farm, which if you like lavender like my wife does, it sounds like heaven. I, however, was apprehensive as to what was on offer for myself and a toddler.
Fortunately, Mrs M followed up her opening statement, with it’s free to go in and there is a narrow gauge railway! We quickly jumped into the car, and we were off!
The website doesn’t really do justice to the attraction until you download the visitor map. In addition to Lavender & Heather Gardens and the Miniature Railway, there is a Woodland Walk, Wildflower Sculpture Walk, Maze, Games Area, Ponds and a Tearoom.
To get an idea of the layout and whilst it was quiet, we booked ourselves on the Narrow Gauge Railway. Incorporating a tunnel engineered into the layout of the farm added a real sense of authenticity which is rare on children’s rides (perhaps I am overthinking), but the route is attractive and also has a number of little crossings.
What made the visit for me was the opportunity for some amateur photography. There is a wealth of wildlife bustling around the gardens. I don’t think I have ever seen so many bees and butterflies, in one place. We also heard crickets, birds and saw the odd dragonfly.
The vibrant lavender and attractive sculptures ensured there was no end to the photo opportunities.
We didn’t attempt the maze, but did complete half the Woodland Walk before then following the Sculpture Walk that includes walking over the railway bridge!
It was one of the hottest days of the year, so we made the most of the woodland canopy before heading for an ice cream holiday treat.
We had a lovely time a Wolds Way Lavender Farm. Our parents would love it and with the great mix of children’s activities, games areas, nature walks and Lavender there is something for everyone at this relaxing location.
The free entry helps the lavender farm rate highly, but it is the mix of elements that ensure this small area of the picturesque Yorkshire Wolds is worth a visit with the whole family.
Lavender & Miniature Railway Family Day Out
Wolds Way Lavender near York is a fabulous outdoor attraction with a good range of things to do for a family spanning all ages. I would definitely invite the grandparents for this calming but varied Lavender Farm.
Free Entry and a reasonably priced cafe alongside walks, wildlife, trains and photography opportunities made this a memorable and enjoyable day out.
