Week 1 (3rd September)

Whitby Pirate Festival

Whitby | 7th – 9th September | Website

A Piratical weekend full of fun, live music, kids entertainment and swashbuckling all in aid of the RNLI. Dust off your eye-patches and head to Whitby for a day of swashbuckling fun for all the family. 

Hunton Steam Gathering 2018

Hunton | Nr Bedale | 8th – 9th September | Website

The organisers are gearing up for this year’s event to be the biggest yet with over 700 vintage vehicle exhibits expected to make the annual pilgrimage to the show field. Exhibits include a large selection of steam engines, vintage commercial vehicles, cars, tractors, bikes, stationary engines, motoring and agricultural displays. Attractions will also include craft stalls, autojumble and many diverse trade stalls. The Sunday will see a vintage ploughing match and a local Produce Show. There really is something for all the family.

Dinosaur Weekend

Cannon Hall Farm | Nr Barnsley | 8th – 9th September | Website

Visit Cannon Hall Farm on September 8 or 9 for a spectacular dinosaur adventure and register as a trainee ranger at D.I.N.O basecamp, where the chief ranger will guide you through Jurassic knowledge and then train you in what to do in an emergency situation- a dinosaur break out!

Dog Show

Farmer Copleys | Pontefract | 9th September | Website

You’d be barking mad to miss this! We had so much fun with the last one, we’re doing it all over again. Lovely rosettes, treats to all placed dogs, our champions and reserve champions both receive a voucher to spend within Farmer Copleys. 

Surrealist Landscapes

The Hepworth | Wakefield | 9th September | Website

Work together as a family to create giant surreal landscapes in the gallery garden.

Create somewhere to dream, hide or watch the sky. Add colour, reflections or a window to another world, inspired by our exhibitions Lee Miller and Surrealism in Britain and Viviane Sassen: Hot Mirror.

Week 2 (10th September)

Heritage Open Day – Ryedale Folk Museum

Ryedale Folk Museum | Ryedale | 15th September | Website

As part of Heritage Open Days you can visit Ryedale Folk Museum on Saturday 15 September for FREE! Come and explore our twenty buildings, set in six beautiful acres, as you learn how people have lived, worked and played in Ryedale from the Iron Age to the 1950s. 

Legends: Arjuna

Royal Armouries | Leeds | 15th – 16th September | Website

An action-packed themed weekend spotlighting the skilled archer and hero of the Indian epic poem ‘The Mahabharata’. Inspired by our global collection, the Legends event season explores mighty and mysterious warrior legends from cultures around the world through storytelling, performances, combat demonstrations, music, film and activities for all ages.

Week 3 (17th September)

Beach Clean

The Humber | Hull | 22nd September | Website

This event is part of the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Beachwatch, a nationwide annual beach clean-up and litter survey organised which takes place on beaches all over the UK. Each piece of litter collected is identified, weighed and recorded before being carefully disposed of. The data collected goes towards the Marine Conservation Society’s national survey, which is subsequently used to help raise public awareness of the impact of litter on the environment.

Suitable for children aged 3 upwards, this is a great way of helping your local environment. Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult at all times and will receive a free goody bag for taking part. Please make sure to wear comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear on the day. Gloves and hand sanitiser will be provided on the day.

NBR Train Gala

North Bay Railway | Scarborough | 22nd – 23th September | Website

Ever wanted to see all our engines in one day? Why not come down to the North Bay Railway and join in the fun at our upcoming Gala? Every available engine will be running on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September, including our steam engine ‘GEORGINA’! Trains are running regularly from 10:00! Neptune, Triton, Poseidon, Robin Hood and Georgina are looking forward to seeing you. 

999 Emergency Day

An action-packed family day out celebrating the work of the many Emergency Services across the UK. Last year’s 999 Emergency Day was a huge success, with a diverse range of Emergency Services personnel all joining us to talk to visitors about their various roles and how they all work together.

Week 4 (24th September)

Annual Steam Gala 2018

North Yorkshire Moors Railway | Pickering, Levisham, Goathland, Grosmont | 28th – 30th September | Website

North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) will host its Annual Steam Gala from Friday 28th September to Sunday 30th September, with a combination of guest locomotives and home fleet engines in steam over the weekend. Experience this year’s Steam Gala which will be unlike any other as the railway celebrates 100 years of the railway’s Q6 locomotives along with the 100th anniversary of the RAF. Don’t miss out on the celebration!

Autumn Festival at Pontefract Castle

Pontefract Castle | Pontefract | 29th – 30th September | Website

A celebration of traditional British crafts like those that would have been used in the heyday of Pontefract Castle.

Come and see Artisan craft specialists from across the country demonstrate the skills and products that built medieval England and have a go at some yourself. A selection of unique handcrafted products will be available, a great opportunity to get ahead on your Christmas shopping if you are looking for something special.

Call into the visitor centre to explore the History of Pontefract Castle exhibition, have a go at some fun craft activities and dress up as a character from the past, who will you be?

Apple Family Fun Day

Nostell Priory | Wakefield | 30th September | Website

On Sunday join Nostell for an Apple Family Fun Day, 11am-3pm. Get sticky hands with apple pressing and get stuck in to games on the South Lawn. Bring all the family for creative crafts inspired by the changing seasons and once you’re tired out from all those apple antics, snuggle up for story time.
