Days Out in Yorkshire – May

It’s a busy month with two Bank Holidays, a Royal Wedding and Little M’s birthday! the good news, is there is plenty going on in our list of Yorkshire Family Days Out.

A highlight from last year was the Tractor Road Run (Watch the Video Here), whilst we have also enjoyed the sunshine with days out at Filey Beach.

Week 1 (Bank Holiday Weekend)

Legends: Robin Hood

Royal Armouries | Leeds | 5th – 7th May | Website

Enjoy an action-packed themed weekend at Royal Armouries Museum about Robin Hood, the outlaw and insurgent who robbed the rich to give to the poor.

Inspired by their global collection, the Legends event season explores mighty and mysterious warrior legends from cultures around the world through storytelling, performances, combat demonstrations, music, film and activities for all ages.

Sheep Shearing Weekend

Cannon Hall Farm | Nr Barnsley | 5th – 7th May | Website

Join us this Bank Holiday weekend for bags of farm fun – our farmers will be shearing our sheep to prepare them for Summer.

Alongside our new lambs and daily sheep talks, we will be doing shearing demonstrations every day between in the Roundhouse on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Fin-tastic Bank Holiday Fun

Join us for fin-tastic family day out this May Bank Holiday weekend as we get green fingered and plant wildflower seeds to take home for your garden.

Make your own badge at craft corner as well as lots of daily highlights including our daily dive shows and touch pool sessions too!

Behind the Scenes 2018

North Yorkshire Moors Railway | Pickering | 5th – 7th May | Website

Explore ‘Behind the Scenes’ at one of the most popular heritage railway lines, where you will be able to take a sneaky peek at the areas we usually have closed. This event will showcase all the work that goes into keeping the wheels turning. Check out the engine sheds at Grosmont, learn about the infrastructure and bridges at Goathland, and much more.

Fun Dog Show

Farmer Copleys | Pontefract | 6th May | Website

This is a NEW event for us, but don’t panic it is been organised by seasoned professionals. Lovely rosettes, treats to all placed dogs, our champions and reserve champions both receive a voucher to spend within Farmer Copleys.

We had an amazing time watching the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire. It was my first solo tour to Leeds with Little M. Read about Tour De Yorkshire Experience.

Tour de Yorkshire: Ready, Steady, Go!

We’ll be celebrating the Tour de Yorkshire coming to Calderdale with a fun day of activities and celebrations in the grounds of Eureka!

Get into the Tour de Yorkshire spirit with a day of jumping, dancing and cycling as we celebrate one of the biggest events in the cycling calendar setting off from our neighbours The Piece Hall at 12.10pm.

Yorkshire Brick Show 2018

Thornes Park Stadium | Wakefield | 6th – 7th May | Website

Returning for our fifth anniversary on May Bank Holiday weekend from the 6th to the 7th of May 2018, there will be models galore from all themes in the LEGO universe, including City layouts, Trains, Star Wars and more. There will certainly be something for everyone.

What’s more, there will be loads of activities for the kids (and grown-ups) to get involved in, whether it’s in our build zone, taking part in fantastic competitions to win fabulous LEGO prizes, you’re guaranteed a grand day out!


Week 2 (12-13th May)

Nostel Tractor Road Run

Farmer Copleys  | Pontefract | 13th May

If you love tractors and helicopters then you are in for real treat this weekend. Raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, this is a fantastic family charity event.

National Mills Weekend in Leeds

Leeds Industrial Museum and Thwaite Mills | Leeds | 12th – 13th May | Website

At Leeds Industrial Museum and Thwaite Mills we will be offering buy on get one free admission between both sites over the weekend. Keep your ticket from one site and get into the other for free (for this weekend only)

We’ll have working machinery and guided tours on both days plus demonstrations and drop in workshops run by the International Felters Association and a pop up exhibition called Women Work and War. Plus the chance to see our current blockbuster exhibition Queens of Industry.

Week 3 (14th – 15th May)

Sherburn Gala

Sherburn-in-Elmet | Sherburn | 19th May | Website

Who doesnt wish a village fate? The Sherburn Gala is back for it’s 42nd year on Saturday, May 19th and will include two themes this year.  The first will be Royal Weddings, as the Royal Wedding will be taking place on the same day and the second will be WW1 as 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Bingley Canal Festival

Five Rise Locks | Bingley | 19th May | Website

Festival activities will take place at Bingley Arts Centre, Bingley Market Square and the Three and Five Rise Locks. The day includes a full indoor and outdoor market in the market square, bouncy slide, trampolines, rides, hot food, bars, singing at 3pm with the fabulous All Together Now choir. On the canal towpath you will find the amazing Kennet, Canoe Trail, RNLI, free boat trips plus much more! Walkers are welcome will be hosting two walks. The family one will be at 10am meeting at the Butter cross and then one at 11.30am, meeting outside the train station

Haworth 1940s Weekend

Haworth Village | Nr Bradford | 19th – 20th May | Website

Haworth’s Annual 1940s nostalgic 2 day event, come along and soak up the brilliant atmosphere, enter into the spirit of the era by dressing up and joining in too.

Events take place throughout the village, including vintage vehicle displays, evacuees event, re-enactments, speeches from Churchill, jive dancing, singing and bands playing.


Week 4 (21st – 22nd May)

Geocaching Treasure Hunt

North York Moors National Park | Ravenscar | 26th May | Website

Using one of our GPS units, enjoy a 2-3 mile walk searching for clues in hidden boxes. You pay £5 per family group plus a refundable £20 deposit for each GPS unit. Just turn up on the day, but please allow approximately 2 hours to complete the route. Latest departure time is 2pm.

May-Hem Circus

Siege Event

Something for everyone! See how a medieval fortress like Pontefract Castle would have been attacked. Have a go at the climbing wall to see how difficult it would be to scale the castles mighty walls. Or for the more relaxed visit listen to one of our fascinating talks on medieval siege warfare.


Week 5 (28th – 29th May)

Lords and Ladies

Dress as Henry VIII or Katharine Parr and discover the tale of their meeting here in the Esk Valley. Make your own coat of arms and finish with a bow and arrow contest!
