Week 1 (30th August)
The Deep | Hull | 21st July – 2nd September | Website
It’s all about slime this summer at The Deep from 21 July to 2 September.
Join us at 11am, 1pm and 3pm for ‘The Slime Show’ where your little scientists can help with exciting experiments as we explore which animals use slime in their everyday lives. There’s props galore, and of course, lots of gooey green stuff. And if that’s not enough, you can even make your own pot of slime (12-4pm) to take home for just £1 – the question is, what colour will yours be? Don’t forget to take a picture at the mad scientist photo board too and share it with us at #thedeephull.
The Science of Frankenstein
Thackray Medical Museum | Leeds | 23rd July – 31st August | Website
200 years since the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, we are delving into the science of the novel to explore the links between electricity and the body, and discovering just how vital electricity is to human life.
We won’t be stitching body parts together (no need to worry), but we do have lots to take part in!
Play a game of Giant “Frankenstein” Operation, have a go at stop motion animation, and take part in an electronics workshop. Please note: activities are weekdays only.
Yorkshire Day at Pontefract Castle

Ever wondered what the range of a Civil Wars cannon or musket was? Want to know how tough life really was for those stuck in the castle surrounded by Cromwell’s army? Find out at our special Yorkshire Day celebrations at the Castle.
Come and relax is the historic grounds of Pontefract Castle and listen to a traditional brass band concert (The Band of the West Yorkshire Police) and find out discover what it was like as a soldier in the garrison of Pontefract Castle during the English Civil Wars.
Pop into the visitor centre for a fun, free craft activity. Make a fabulous Yorkshire Rose spinner, not only will the kids have fun making it but lots of fun playing with it too! Spend some time exploring the History of Pontefract Castle exhibition and pop into the Liquorice Café for something delicious.
National Playday 2018
The Hepworth | Wakefield | 1st August | Website
Join artists Pester & Rossi and Roos Dijkhuizen to transform our gallery garden into a celebration of play. Design and make inflatables with your family to create a giant collaborative playscape to explore and play within. Enjoy activities for little ones with popular vlogger playHOORAY! Explore lots of activities designed especially for early years and play with natural materials, playdough, stacking, pouring and construction.
Play with materials in our Sculpt & Play workshop led by artist Jo Blaker. Experiment creating hollows and holes inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures. Burn off some energy in our playground or take a break and enjoy some yummy street food from Ape About Pizza and Madame Crepe.
National Playday 2018

Wednesday 1 August is National Playday – the annual celebration of children’s right to play and we have lots of activities outside for you to enjoy with your family, run by Calderdale Play Development Service and the team here at Eureka! FREE Playday activities will take place in the Eureka! Park, but please note that normal museum admission still applies if you wish to go inside the museum. Plus, our friends The Piece Hall are celebrating the anniversary of their re-opening on the same day with LOADS of family activities.

Our pop-up beach will be located on the bank of the River Wharfe, outside the Cavendish Pavilion.
Let your little ones imagine they have taken to the high seas by captaining our new wooden pirate ship. Shipwrecked on our beach you will find the ship has slides, climbing nets, a fireman’s pole and a ship’s wheel.
Our beach will also have giant deck chairs and space to build sandcastles galore!
Lendal Bridge Landing | York | 3rd – 25th August | Website
Join famous Yorkshire prophetess Old Mother Shipton and Roman soothsayer Tiberius Fabius Bibulus as they gaze into York’s dark past and shed light on some of York’s most infamous ghost stories. As you sail along the river, things will take a turn to the paranormal as you learn more about 11 of the city’s spectral sightings on this unique tour through Europe’s most haunted City!

Illyria – The Adventures of Doctor Dolittle

When Doctor John Dolittle of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh is taught by his wise old parrot Polynesia how to talk to animals, news of his skills spreads far and wide. Soon animals across the world send messages asking for his help. So, he buys a leaky old ship and, together with his trusty pet-crew of Jip the dog, Chee-Chee the monkey, Dab-Dab the Duck and permanently hungry Gub-Gub the pig, sets forth on a mission to heal illness, spread compassion and gain a greater understanding of the animal kingdom.
A funny, much-loved and exciting adventure, with a strong message about responsibility towards animals and the environment.
National Festival Circus

Roll up roll up as the National Festival Circus comes to Lightwater Valley.
Expect fabulously funny clowns, balancing equilibrists, fast tempo juggling, baffling magic and bucketfuls of fun. The shows will be filled with thrills, laughs & excitement from the 8th – 12th August. Limited availability so slots must be pre-booked in advance when purchasing tickets online.
Shows run at 11:30, 1pm and 2:30pm and last approximately 30 minutes.
City Beach at Victoria Gardens

Bucket and spades at the ready as the City Beach returns to Leeds this August! For its sixth year, the urban beach will be taking place on Victoria Gardens outside Leeds Art Gallery bringing the excitement of the seaside right in the heart of the city centre, with a wide range of family friendly activities such as Miama Surf, Waikiki car, Jungle Funhouse, Bamboo Bungees and more.

Join us for the full VW experience this summer! There’s everything from trade stands, club stands and vehicle displays, to camping, entertainment and live music. With a great laid back and family atmosphere, VW Festival 2018 is back, bigger and better than ever!
Greenhill Park | Sheffield | 12th August | Website
This huge event over several acres consists of a huge 120 ft music marquee, loads of free funfair rides, free entry. Sheffield’s largest independent festival also has a classic car/motor bike area with over 500 vehicles booked, any new classic welcome but must pre-book, also farmers market, indoor craft area, trade stands welcome we also have a dog show, and a huge re-enactment area and a dance arena, birds of prey area and show.
Week 3 (13th August)
Lotherton Hall | Nr Leeds | 18th – 19th August | Website
Relive the fun fifties and swinging sixties in style, with vintage market stalls around the site, live music and outdoor games in association with Rose & Brown Co. Don’t be afraid to come dressed for the occasion! As always, there will be craft activities for kids in the house, and fun for all the family. What’s more, one person enters free if you arrive in a pre-1970s vehicle!
Day Out with Thomas
Kirklees Light Railway | Clayton West | 18th – 19th August | Website
Make your day a Day Out with Thomas as Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends Percy, Toby, Emily and Mavis, visit the Kirklees Light Railway from the Island of Sodor!
The Fat Controller will be on hand to make sure the engines are all being really useful and behaving themselves and will conduct an opening ceremony each day at 9.45am, assisted by Rusty & Dusty, the trusty platform sweepers!
The first train of the day is pulled by Thomas and departs Clayton West at 10am (PLEASE NOTE: the 10am train is the ONLY train pulled by Thomas to Shelley). Trains will depart every 30 minutes thereafter until the final train departs Clayton West at 4pm. The remaining trains are pulled by Emily or our home locos, Owl and Sian.
After Thomas returns from his 10am trip to Shelley, he will remain at Clayton West to give platform rides for everyone to enjoy!
We strongly recommend booking in advance for this event. We may be unable to accommodate walk ups on the day as this is a very busy event.
The Hepworth Wakefield Summer Fair

Moscow State Circus

Wild West Horse Show

Don’t miss Atkinson Action Horses in our boot-stomping, gun-slinging, stunt-riding Wild West spectacular.
Highlights of the show, by this crack team of TV and film dare-devils, include sharp-shooting, trick-riding, liberty displays, and a stage coach battle complete with horse-falls, stirrup drags and crazy horse to carriage transfers. Just like in the movies.
Week 5 (27th August)
RSPB St Aidan’s | Nr Castleford | 31st August | Website
Join us on a bat hunt as dusk falls across St Aidan’s. We’ll learn about their habits, searching for these mysterious acrobats by sight, and listening for their clicks with bat detectors.
Bring along a bat detector if you have one, warm clothes and a torch are advised. Booking essential.
The Great Brick Adventure
