At just over 1.5 miles, the walk around Pugney’s Country Park in Wakefield is a gentle stroll to keep Little M entertained or asleep!
A unique space in West Yorkshire (to my knowledge), Pugneys was transformed in 1985 from a quarry to a nature park, which has two large lakes, a cafe, sports centre, miniature railway and an active events calendar.
As an intermittent regular i am still surprised that parking is now pay and display… which i have several thoughts about, however, i don’t pay Wakefield council tax!
It does however stop it from being a free experience, which does stop it from being a ‘drop in’ activity. There are also several optional activities for older children including a new water sphere activity.
Pugney’s Lakeside Miniature Railway
Little M didn’t fancy a rail trip on this adventure, which leaves the Pugneys Lakeside Station as one of the very few in the counties we haven’t tried, but it runs every weekend and looks to have a forward thinking team (read about pugneys light railway)
There has been a recent increase to £2 for a return trip.
Wondering around Pugneys is fine in a pram, but the nature of the gravel does make trikes and the like a bit of a challenge. For little M, it is the perfect stroll, when he is feeling tired, teethy or a little poorly.
Kicking back his tiny feet, he happily enjoys the trip round the park, showing occasional interest at train stations, bird viewing huts and on this occasion over excitement two thirds on our anti-clockwise canter, where dogs were running into the water and splashing around.
The Play Area
Ok, even with the bank holiday special actives, inflatables, trampoline, ice cream vans and other features, the play area is disappointing. It is not a park or entertainment centre for babies, however Little M did enjoy a walk way, tiny bridge and spheres at the end of our walk.
The perfect summers day light excursion
Pugney’s Country Park in Wakefield is a superb getaway for a stroll on a sunny day, with activities on the lake, birds to spy on, a miniature railway, cafe and small outdoor play area.
Perfect for a free day trip with friends and family, Pugneys always seems to have something to offer.
